As a young man, Lasantha escapes from a brutal patriarchy in Sri Lanka to come to the United States on a full scholarship in order to become a celebrated Broadway star. In a few months, after being callously abandoned by Kyle, Lasantha is diagnosed with a chronic, degenerative, incurable neurological disease. I've been sitting on this review for a while, trying to find the right words, but I find myself yet unprepared. I want to tell you that this is because Lasantha has used all the words up, until I felt breathless, and yet could hear only my own breath pulsing in my ears as I read. This is what Life writing should be, raw, passionate, willing to tell the truth as much as a simple human body remembers and speaks into the universe. YOU should read this book not only because Lasantha's language is lovely, painful and full of healing flesh, but because his is one of those stories rarely told, and tragically even more rarely published. You will be changed as you read, and if not that, what good is a book that cannot make you see the world with new eyes.Product details

Fireflies in the Dark A memoir Lasantha Rodrigo 9780692783962 Books Reviews
With the beautiful descriptive storytelling, I was transported. I could almost feel the warmth of the Sri Lankan sunshine and smell the orchids blooming at Lasantha's family home, and then the chilly drizzle during his time in Tacoma. Inspiring is a word frequently thrown about, but it really does apply here. Lasantha's story is one of resiliency and enduring spirit. This is a must-read, especially for fans of works like "Angela's Ashes."
Lasantha Rodrigo shows what it feels like to love an abusive father and boyfriend. While condemning their physical and emotional violence, he portrays them with depth. Moments of kindness and affection, like the childhood recollection below, explain Lasantha's emotional ambivalence and why it is so difficult to extricate himself from these harmful relationships
"When I slept in my bed sometimes, [my father] Thaththa came in and sat on the bed. I pretended to be asleep. He said, 'If he’s asleep, his left leg should shake a little,' so I shook my leg. Then he said, 'I caught the rascal!' and tickled me. We ended up laughing. Those memories come to me when I least expect them ...”
I am not a reader. I don't just sit down with any book and read it all. This book was different. Lasantha's story doesn't just tell me, it shows me the love in his heart for everything and everyone around him. He drags us through his worst times in his life and we feel as though we are right there with him. Perhaps we have been there and wish we had Lasantha's hand to hold because he understands what lows are and how to recover. He also allows us to take a beautiful journey to his home country. Although I've never been there, I feel like I can smell the smells and see the sights through his words. Thank you for the journey, Las! Sissifus loves you.
Lasantha Rodrigo weaves the narrative strands of his life into a rich tapestry of love, hope, fear, loss, pain, sadness, hilarity, rejection, and redemption allowing the reader to become fully wrapped up in the warm, comforting cadence of his beautiful prose. The story of Las' life teaches us that stepping outside of our "known" world makes all the difference--it increases our chances, broadens our scope, awakens dreams, widens our hearts, and lets in all the love of the friends of whom we haven't yet met. I cannot wait to send this to everybody on my holiday list! I invite you to take this journey into "otherness" to inhabit the heart of a man who has triumphed over the fear of losing himself only to discover just who he was always meant to be. You may just discover the same.
This is a tale of courage, resilience and determination. Told in vignette form with flash forwards to his present life, Lasantha's recollections brim with a sincerity that touches the heart of the reader. There are achievements to be celebrated, confusion to be navigated, pain to be overcome and fear to be conquered. His life has definitely not been an easy one and he faced a myriad obstacles, often in the way of oppressive social structures, from patriarchy, to heteronormativity and even bigotry. What is inspiring is his unwavering sense of optimism and hope. When you read Lasantha's memoir you see for certain that life is hard. Then you look deeper and you see that, with the right mindset (and a little help from family and friends) you can make it through. The cliché rings true for 'Fireflies in the Dark' this is a must read!
This book is an unforgettable, emotionally powerful memoir of the author's life. Beautifully written, funny and heartbreakingly honest. I admire Lasantha's self-determination, courage and perseverance in reaching for his dreams and his endurance of the many trials and tribulations in his life and still what is to come. Leaving his native country to live the life he wanted, leaving his family and all that was familiar to him, facing MS alone, all of this is humbling to me and everyone should read this, it gives a different perspective to life! It is riveting and I didn't want to put it down! Now that I've read it, I definitely will read it again!
A raw and honest look into his own background, upbringing, sexuality, and humanity. It is difficult for a person to be able to take a step back and truly look at themselves, let alone putting oneself out there for others to read. The author's prose is almost poetic at times, as he describes his own upbringing, his personal struggles, and his growth as an individual. Having grown up in a totally different culture on the opposite side of the world, this book was an eye opening experience for me, considering both where the author came from, as well as how other people in other parts of the world live, grow, love, interact, etc. It's definitely worth a read.
I've been sitting on this review for a while, trying to find the right words, but I find myself yet unprepared. I want to tell you that this is because Lasantha has used all the words up, until I felt breathless, and yet could hear only my own breath pulsing in my ears as I read.
