I give this book an overall 3.5 stars. The story was interesting and complex, but the not as filled with action nor suspense as I would have believed from reading the blurb.

While this story has a relatively slow pace, it is still very well written. The main character has a lot of shadows in her past that must be dealt with before she can figure out what to do with her future, and Carla Neggers has always been good at spinning a good back story for her characters.

I didn't feel close to the main character in this story for the first two-thirds or so of the story. The way she is portrayed made me unsure if she were trustworthy or not and I had a difficult time warming up to her. There are also an abundance of other characters early on in the story and that made it hard for me to get to know any of them very personally.

What I did love about this story was the description. From the very first few pages, the author managed to capture my adventuresome spirit with her beautiful descriptions of New England and adequately make me feel like I was there.

The love story is slowly built and has a nice ending, not entirely expected.

This was a good book to read on an evening when the weather outside made me want to transport to somewhere else. I would recommend this to readers who like complex characters.

This review is based on a digital ARC from netgalley and the publisher.

Cider Brook Swift River Valley Carla Neggers 9780778315889 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed this book about a pirate hunting woman and a carpenter/firefighter who I initially didn't trust each other. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
Beautiful love stories from today and the past. Carla Neggers has done it again with mysteries, family love, new friends in a quaint setting. I was transported there for a few hours and felt a part of the community and loved the friends I made.
A fun book with some very likable characters, set in a town that feels familiar somehow. It's a fun adventure with a great protagonist, I say give it a read. (read the first 2 in the series first of course).
YES! It's been a while since I read A Carla Neggers book, and now I'm wondering why. It didn't take me long to remember the Swift River books, as some of names came up and how their stories were connected. Learning to trust and open up to the past brings Samantha and Justin to loving future.
Found myself skimming from about halfway through as it was pretty much a repetition of the same stuff over and over. The issue about why Sam was fired was fairly lame but was hashed to death. Sam and Justin just did not engage me - they both came across as just a bit weird. Didn't feel there was any real connection between them either let alone a romance. The mystery plot wasn't even interesting let alone intriguing. Pity because I liked the previous two books in this series but this one was a miss.
I just love the enormous cast in this series. Each one is similar, but different. The characters are strong (sometimes bullheaded) but entirely believable. The town, people and atmosphere are almost tangible. Not only a nice place to visit, but you could easily live there.

This book was as enjoyable as the others I have read and can't wait for the next installment.

A great series for Carla Neggers.
There are any ways of exploring and many reasons to explore. So finds out Sam Bennett who was not what some thought she was and who she wished desperately wished she wasn't. When Sam finds something to really return to this river valley town, her past was catching up with her. Misunderstood and dedicated to following her grandfather's footsteps, she soon has her every footstep watched. Read Cider Brook by Carla, Meggers to find out why!
I always know a romance from Carla Neggers will be a relaxing, enjoyable read, and this one fits the pattern -- this one's not one of her detection/investigation books, although there are certainly some threads of mystery as Samantha Bennett struggles to figure out what's brought her to the old cider mill in rural Knights Bridge (about 2 hours from Boston) and why she hasn't yet left. Rugged and handsome Justin Sloan, whose volunteer firefighter skills bring him to Sam's rescue, is certainly part of it; so it the strong sense of family affection that pervades so much of the town. Sam herself is the granddaughter of a famous explorer and treasure hunter, and she's aware that digging into the past of this little town has something to do with the way she loves and misses her grandfather. Those who've read the others in this sweet series will recognize the people Sam is getting to know; for those new to the series, "learning" the characters through Sam's eyes (and heart) can be a midwinter pleasure. And oh yes, that pirate treasure? Well, you'll have to figure out, along with Sam and Justin, where it might be and whether she'll be able to discover the treasures meant for her.
